Look at it. No, avert your eyes because that is what I have had to do for the last few months as I make my way through the car-hole after a hard days work. My workbench, silently judging me, encumbered with all manner of remnants from projects old and recent. Paints, paint brushes, lubricants, sandpaper, tools that have homes and stuff that I don’t know where to put. There are 11 different types of tape in that picture. I will list them for you:
Teflon tape
D ouble sided foam tape
Gorilla tape (and its glue counterpart)
C lear packaging tape
H ockey tape
B lack electricians tape
G reen electricians tape
M asking tape
R ubber waterproofing tape (why yes I own a Wrangler why do you ask?)
C anopy tape
D rywall tape
My tape problem is bigger than I thought.
“You should clean your workbench while you’re on holiday. It’ll feel good ” She said. And She was right. My workbench is functional again. All the tools and lubricants and paints and tapes either got put in their home, found a new home or were tossed (I never toss fasteners...they go in my assorted fastener drawer which ALWAYS has the right sized screw or nut/bolt that I’m looking for for random jobs)
Ta-Da. No more guilt. Well, except for the 15 other projects for the Datsun and around the house.
Cleaning the Workbench also gave me the chance to remember and appreciate the vintage Snap-On tool chest I was gifted many years ago. Can anyone tell me how old it might be?
Oh and now that the front is closed, I remembered I had a very cool Weiand sticker on it.

You’ve lost a hammer.
You otherwise get 10 OCD points.
I need to do the same but it’s too cold and dark.

Looks great. I got a Craftsman rolling tool chest for my Birthday yesterday. Got it kinda arranged today but my work bench is still piled about 3 feet high.

Maintaining a clear workbench is something I struggle with too. Seriously thinking about painting the words NOT A SHELF across it as a reminder ...

I’m k in da partial to the before look, but whatever motivates you is good. I really like the deep bow hacksaw, I may have to get one of those for myself!

It’s a life saver when you’re doing drain work but when you don’t need it, it’s annoying..lol

Nothing better than arranging a new tool chest. For me, it’s like arranging a new pedal board.

I shall not judge you for the workbench. My personal workbench ends up looking like that at least twice a year. I’m trying to get batter about cleaning up after each project.
Your old Snap On box is super cool! I love that Weiand sticker.

Thanks, I found a bag full of old stickers I saved when I was a kid on the parts counter back in the 80s. I thought there wouldn’t be a better spot for them than on an old vintage tool box.

You should see my desk.....

10 kinds of tape, nice, I have the shelf of many spray paints, have never counted, but maybe about 3 dozen or so.
My workbench definitely gets like that when I am working on a project. Then after a while it just starts to stay that way, then my wife asks me why I am putting work on top of the garbage bins when I have a workbench. I think I have issues.

Do you have the other half of this amulet?

As a fellow workbench enthusiast, this pleases me.

My current workbench is very small, which, it turns out, has forced me to keep it clean. If I leave 3-4 things out from a project, I can’t do much of anything else. When I work on larger things (like skis) , they span between the bench and the saw table that’s about 4 feet away. I got a few toolboxes as gifts over the years, and they’re stacked up about 5' high now with the bottom one being a big roller, so it can move as needed. Casters have been key in the small space.
Funny you mention the tape thing, my pegboard has to be almost 50% taken up with various rolls of tape. It doesn’t fit in drawers well, but it’s perfect on long pegs, so... yeah. Ironically, not one of them is duct tape.

Same here regarding the size. We have a standard two car garage so my bench is narrow. I can’t do my guitar tech stuff on it but it works for carb work or stuff like that. Don’t you envy those guys with a big shop?

I would take literally any garage at this moment. We didn’t look at any houses without garages, but then, the one we bought everything else - a view, easy, big driveway, nice yard, end of a dead end, close to town and the highway but not TOO close, etc. etc. - so then we thought we’d build one right away, and 2008 happened. Then kids. And... here we are.
